The 7 pillars of resilience

Resilience definition

The term resilience is derived from the Latin word resiliere. Translated, this roughly means to cushion or bounce. Resilience is referred to as the resilience of the soul.

It describes the ability to cope with stressful situations and crises with the help of one’s own and other social resources.

Originally, this term comes from materials science. The significance is that certain materials deform under pressure and then return to their original shape. In psychology, the term says a little bit more.

Challenges and crises can make us grow. So those who strengthen their resilience,

has an effective remedy for burnout and stress.

The 7 pillars of resilience

The importance of resilience

Through resilience, you have the ability to see in every crisis a new opportunity for your growth. This will significantly reduce your perception of stress. Resilience is particularly important today. Especially in the professional and private context, there have been some changes in recent years to which we have had to adapt. If you are resilient, you can also let things m bounce off you and react in a much more relaxed way.

This works best when your 7 pillars of resilience are in balance.

The 7 pillars of resilience

Acceptance

Accepting a situation creates distance. Accept means “I accept the current situation”. You can’t change every situation. Even Napoleon knew: “If you want to change something that cannot be changed, then change your attitude towards it”.

Acceptance is always the first step in overcoming a situation. Acceptance alone is a big factor in reducing stress.

Optimism

Optimism can help you use your resources purposefully and effectively. Part of optimism is learning that something good can happen in the future.

Get out of the victim mindset

Why me, or why always me, are questions that quickly arise. However, these questions do not allow an approach to find a solution. Those who find themselves in the victim role often find themselves in a learned helplessness. Get out of that role!

Personal responsibility

Direct your attention away from circumstances or other people. Turn your attention inward. Take responsibility for your own actions and inactions.

The 7 pillars of resilience

Social networks

In stress management, your social contacts are also called resources. And that’s exactly what your contacts are. They give you through their experience or contacts, the possibility to cope with a situation.

Solution-oriented

What could a possible solution look like? Here you move away from the problem and towards the solution. How quickly and well you succeed depends on your own inner attitude. In doing so, you may ask yourself what expectations you have for your future and what your further goals should be.

Future-oriented

With the power gained from the first 6 pillars, you can now plan your future anew.

Always remember:

You always have a choice. You can overcome challenging situations on your own if you use them consciously. With resilience you can assert yourself and prevail in your private and social environment. This will significantly reduce your stress and the likelihood of burnout.
